Reading Mastery Signature Edition

Reading Mastery Signature Edition

Reading Mastery Signature Edition (RMSE) is a complete basal reading program that uses the Direct Instruction method to help students master essential decoding and comprehension skills. The program places particular emphasis on teaching thinking skills and helping students acquire background knowledge. Program materials include fully scripted lessons to guide teachers through carefully constructed instructional steps – modeling new content, providing guided practice, offering individualized practice, and applying skills. It also uses a special orthography designed to help students identify letter sounds. The special font is later phased out and replaced with traditional orthography. Signals and group responses are used to keep students involved, help them stay on task, and help with lesson pacing. Teachers assess student performance throughout the program, and struggling students receive practice through remedial exercises. Each program level typically spans one academic year. A typical 30- to 45-minute lesson includes seven to nine short activities encompassing multiple strands of content, including:

  • Phonemic Awareness
  • Letter-Sound Correspondence
  • Sounding Out of Words
  • Word Recognition
  • Vocabulary
  • Oral Reading Fluency
  • Comprehension

Reading Mastery Signature Edition (RMSE) is an update from Reading Mastery Plus, written to incorporate Language for Learning, Language for Thinking, and Reasoning and Writing to become a more comprehensive Language Arts core reading program.

Handwriting Supplement to RMSE

The Sentence Copying Program, developed by the National Institute for Direct Instruction, is a supplemental handwriting program to accompany the Reading Mastery Signature Edition program. The sentence copying sheets correlate with Reading Mastery’s sequence of skill development but do not use its orthography. Instead, they provide handwriting practice of letter forms more commonly taught in typical elementary classrooms. This supplemental program is available for RMSE levels K and 1.

What is a Peer Coach?

Peer coaches play a critical role in sustaining strong implementation of Direct Instruction (DI) at the school level. Selected during the first year of implementation, peer coaches are classroom teachers who demonstrate strong instructional practice, effective communication with colleagues, and a willingness to support others. Because they teach the same programs as their peers, they bring practical expertise and shared experience that help build trust and collaboration across the school.

As implementation progresses, peer coaches extend the impact of NIFDI consultants by providing ongoing, school-based support when consultants are not on-site. Their coaching is non-evaluative and focused on improving student outcomes. Peer coaches reinforce effective teaching practices and guide colleagues to make targeted adjustments that directly impact student performance and behavior.

Peer coaches participate in a structured, multi-year training sequence through NIFDI. Over the course of two to three years, they are trained to analyze student performance data, conduct both brief and extended classroom observations, and support data-driven problem solving. Advanced training prepares them to lead grade-level meetings and contribute to broader instructional planning with school leadership.

By developing peer coaches, schools build internal capacity to maintain and strengthen DI implementation over time—ensuring continuity, supporting new staff, and driving sustained student achievement.
