Reading Mastery Videos

Explore our Reading Mastery video resources designed to support teachers, coaches, and trainers in developing effective Reading Mastery instruction. These demonstration videos provide guidance on lesson delivery, instructional techniques, error correction, and teaching to mastery across Reading Mastery Levels I–III.

This 12-video series, produced by Emmy, DuPont, and Peabody Award-winning documentary producer Jon Palfreman, is designed to help teachers understand the rationale underlying the development of the beginning levels of the Reading Mastery program and provide training in using these levels. The first part of the series describes the elements of the program that have contributed to Reading Mastery’s effectiveness in achieving reading success for students. The next part describes and provides in-class demonstrations for establishing a classroom environment that supports small-group reading instruction. The rest of the series demonstrates how to teach critical exercises in the program. The training videos first model the pronunciation of sounds and blending skills that the teacher will present in early lessons. The remaining videos are organized to be used throughout the school year to help teachers prepare for upcoming lessons and include information on:

  1. Path to Literacy
  2. Why is Reading So Hard?
  3. Anatomy of a Reading Classroom
  4. Countdown to Lesson One
  5. Practice Junction: Practice the Sounds
  6. Practice Junction: Sounds Review and Blending
  7. Practice Junction: Signals and Scripts Lessons 1-8
  8. Practice Junction: Signals and Scripts Lessons 19-29
  9. Practice Junction: Signals and Scripts Lessons 37-56
  10. Practice Junction: Signals and Scripts Lessons 57-96
  11. Practice Junction: Correction Procedures
  12. Sample Workbook and Storybook Formats

Note: The programs referenced in this series are the Reading Mastery Rainbow Edition. The training content is technically correct; however, it is not keyed to the current version of Reading Mastery.

This series is designed to help practitioners learn and practice the key skills necessary to present the first three levels of the Reading Mastery program effectively and efficiently. Following an introduction of the history, research, and philosophy behind DI, Dr. Phyllis Haddox, a highly experienced teacher and trainer, presents in-depth explanations and demonstrations of how to teach the critical exercises in Reading Mastery I, II, and III.

The videos are organized by lesson range so that they can be used at appropriate times during the school year. The videos are very detailed and provide information that can help teachers support all of their students’ success. A good deal of emphasis is placed not only on how to present content, but also on how to correct student errors and teach to mastery. The information in these videos will be particularly beneficial to school and district-level coaches and trainers.

What is a Peer Coach?

Peer coaches play a critical role in sustaining strong implementation of Direct Instruction (DI) at the school level. Selected during the first year of implementation, peer coaches are classroom teachers who demonstrate strong instructional practice, effective communication with colleagues, and a willingness to support others. Because they teach the same programs as their peers, they bring practical expertise and shared experience that help build trust and collaboration across the school.

As implementation progresses, peer coaches extend the impact of NIFDI consultants by providing ongoing, school-based support when consultants are not on-site. Their coaching is non-evaluative and focused on improving student outcomes. Peer coaches reinforce effective teaching practices and guide colleagues to make targeted adjustments that directly impact student performance and behavior.

Peer coaches participate in a structured, multi-year training sequence through NIFDI. Over the course of two to three years, they are trained to analyze student performance data, conduct both brief and extended classroom observations, and support data-driven problem solving. Advanced training prepares them to lead grade-level meetings and contribute to broader instructional planning with school leadership.

By developing peer coaches, schools build internal capacity to maintain and strengthen DI implementation over time—ensuring continuity, supporting new staff, and driving sustained student achievement.
