Effectiveness of Corrective Reading with high school special education students

Abstract:
This one year study examined the effect of the Corrective Reading (CR) program on the reading achievement of ninth and tenth grade students with learning disabilities. Student achievement was compared to low-performing general education students receiving instruction with an alternative teacher-designed approach. All students completed monthly timed reading from a novel from the general education curriculum. Students were administered curriculum based measures and the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) for pre- and posttest measures. Results indicate that students in the CR group increased their correct words read per minute from a fourth to sixth grade level over nine months. Students in both groups improved their timed readings, but students in the CR group improved at a faster rate. (Copyright © 2011, National Institute for Direct Instruction (NIFDI).
