Schools and homes in partnership (SHIP): Long-term effects of a preventative intervention focused on social behavior and reading skill in early elementary school

Abstract:
This study examined the effects of implementing Schools and Homes in Partnership (SHIP), an intervention that aims to prevent aggression and reading failure in early elementary students. This study is a follow-up to Barrera et al. (2002), an initial evaluation of SHIP; the present study included a larger sample size and collected follow-up data for a longer period post-intervention. SHIP combines behavioral parent training, social skills training, and supplemental reading instruction with the Direct Instruction programs, Reading Mastery and Corrective Reading. The intervention was delivered for two years, and follow-up data was collected for an additional two years. For this study, changes in social behavior were measured utilizing parent and teacher reports and ratings as well as direct observation. Results indicate that significant effects were demonstrated on two of the eight social behavior measures: parent daily reports of aggressive behavior and parent ratings of coercive behavior.
