Corrective Reading helps English-Language learners improve reading skills
SRA/McGraw-Hill,
Abstract:
This study examined the effect of Corrective Reading (CR) on the reading achievement of English Language Learner (ELL) students in grades 4-7 in three schools. Student achievement was measured using the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test (GMRT) and the Academic Performance Index (API). Prior to the implementation of CR, fifth grade ELL students at one school averaged five months of growth over one year according to the GMRT. Following the implementation of CR, students demonstrated gains of 10 months over 13 weeks. Seventh grade students at another school demonstrated gains of five months of growth in one year prior to CR, and 18 months of growth following 13 weeks with CR. The API scores for ELL and all students increased over the first three years of teaching with CR. Following the initial success of CR in its first year, the school district adopted Reading Mastery for students in grades K-6. (Copyright © 2011, National Institute for Direct Instruction (NIFDI).
