Effectiveness of the DISTAR reading program for children with learning disabilities

Kuder, S.
This study compared the effectiveness of the DISTAR reading program to a basal reading program on the overall reading scores of elementary students with significant learning disabilities in reading. Forty eight students from seven special education classrooms in three schools in an urban school district were selected for this two year study. All students were administered the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (PPVT-R) to determine equivalence, and each group appeared to be equivalent in terms of age, race, and gender. The Woodcock Reading Mastery Test (WRMT) was administered at the end of the first and second school year to determine student reading achievement. Results indicated no significant differences between the two groups overall reading scores following one and two years of instruction. Students in the DISTAR group did demonstrate higher scores on word attack and word comprehension skills after the first year, but the difference in scores was not statistically significant. Results after two years of instruction revealed no significant differences between the different groups, but students in the DISTAR group tended to make greater gains. Comparing changes in reading achievement from year one to year two, students in the DISTAR group made significant changes in word identification scores.
