The Monterey DI program for students with limited English (ESL)

Abstract:
This study examined the effect of the Direct Instruction for those with Limited English (DILE) program on the academic achievement of English as a Second Language students in the Marina Del Mar School in Monterey California. The DILE program combines elements from Corrective Reading and the DISTAR Language & Reading programs. About 95 students participate in the DILE program every year, and students are instructed in small groups of 6-10 students according to skill level. Students were tested every week with criterion referenced tests in reading, language, math, and spelling. Student achievement was compared to similar students who received the district’s traditional bilingual program. Results from the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills (CTBS) indicated that first and second grade limited and non-English speaking students in the DILE program demonstrated significantly higher scores in reading and math than comparison students. Significantly more students in the DILE program were at or above grade level in reading and math skills than comparison students. Seventy-five percent of DILE students were at or above grade level in reading, and 96% in math, while 19% of comparison students were at or above average in reading and 62% in math. Additionally, the effects of the DILE program remained through the third and fourth grade.
