A comparative analysis of the Reading Mastery and Silver Burdett reading programs for elementary students

Herrington, M. S.
Abstract:
This study compared the effectiveness of two reading programs, Reading Mastery (RM) and Silver Burdett (SB), on elementary students’ acquisition of reading skills as well as the cost effectiveness of each program. Student achievement was measured using scores on the reading portion of the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT), and cost effectiveness was determined by the cost of each program per student. Students in grades 1-3, from four elementary schools, were selected to participate in this study over a three year period (1992-1994). Students were administered the SAT in September of year 1 and April of year 3. Results from the SAT indicated no statistically significant differences between the two groups in terms of mean total reading scores over all three years. RM students in school 4 recorded the greatest mean total reading scores over all three years. There was a statistically significant difference in mean total reading scores between the RM students in school 4 with SB students in school 2. The author’s calculations for the cost per student in each program revealed that the cost for the SB was slightly higher than RM with $151 versus $145 per student.(Copyright © 2011, National Institute for Direct Instruction (NIFDI).
