A comparison of three prereading approaches for kindergarten students

Rawl, R. K.; O', ; S., Tuel F.
Abstract:
This study compared the effect of three instructional programs, DISTAR Reading, Action Reading (AR), and a cognitive development (CD) approach based on Piaget’s theory, on kindergarten students’ reading readiness and mathematics achievement. Additionally, differences between sexes and instructional models were examined. Ninety six kindergarten students from six public elementary schools in Alaska participated in the study. The Metropolitan Readiness Test (MRT) was administered for pretesting and the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills (CTBS) was administered as the posttest, eight months later. Results indicated that there were no significant differences between the DISTAR and CD groups on alphabet, language, and pre-reading skills. Students in the CD group scored significantly higher on visual discrimination skills than students in the DISTAR group. Students in the DISTAR group scored significantly higher on language and pre-reading skills than students in the AR group. Students in the AR group scored significantly higher on visual discrimination skills than students in the DISTAR group. Students in the CD group scored significantly higher on pre-reading and mathematics skills than students in the AR group. In comparison to national percentile rank, students in the DISTAR and CD groups were in the above average to superior range for language, pre-reading, and math skills, while students in the AR group were in the average range.
